Ben Wyvis Hotel, Strathpeffer

The Ben Wyvis Hotel is a large, purpose-built hotel dating from 1879, with substantial additions made in 1884 and again between 1900 and 1901. It was designed as a hotel from the outset. The asymmetrical main block has three storeys and an attic, and the northwest-facing entrance front has nine bays. The exterior is of coursed grey rubble stone with contrasting tooled ashlar dressings. A wide, projecting arched porte-cochère features a decorative cast-iron balustrade, with a later glazed porch inserted to the right of the building. A projecting wing, likely dating from 1900-1901, extends to the northeast and incorporates a three-storey canted end with bipartites (two-part windows) on the ground and first floors, and piended dormer heads to the windows of the second floor. The windows are largely 2-pane sashes, with gabled dormer heads above some. The roof is slate, with end and ridge stacks topped with tall chimney cans.

A pair of square rusticated ashlar gate piers with square caps, detailed with diminutive crenellation, stand at the entrance. These are flanked by low coped quadrants with decorative cast-iron railings.

The architect for the main hotel building was possibly W. C. Joass, although a Tender Notice from 1873 discusses the construction of a large hotel.
