Description
Wyvis Lodge includes stables and game larders, built in 1886. The lodge is an asymmetrical, medium-sized, gabled shooting lodge situated on a commanding site at the western end of Loch Glass. It was constructed for Walter Shoolbred, of the cabinet-making firm of Shoolbred, and built using materials transported by steamer from the eastern end of Loch Glass. The lodge is constructed of stylised random grey rubble with ribbon pointing at ground floor level, with a rendered first floor featuring mock timber framing and stippled infill, and finely tooled contrasting sandstone dressings. A wide verandah, supported by timber columns, encloses the ground floor on its east and south sides, with an entrance under a projecting porch on the east elevation. The lodge has mullioned and transomed windows, and shaped and corniced end and ridge stacks, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The interior retains original panelling throughout the ground and first floors, original chimney pieces on both floors, and a balustraded staircase leading from a panelled hall to the first-floor landing. Notable features include chimney pieces in recessed alcoves in the drawing and dining rooms and in the master bedroom, with the drawing room fireplace having an ochre marble surround initialled ‘WS’, and a projecting ‘Tudor’ chimney piece in the hall. First-floor panelling is partially painted white, some window reveals feature mirrored panels, and some ground-floor panelling in the rear passage and gun room incorporates inlaid deerhide sections. Ribbed plaster ceilings are found in the drawing room, dining room, and master bedroom. Some Shoolbred furniture remains within the lodge.
The stables are a single-storey and attic structure, built using materials similar to the lodge. They include stabling for four horses, a feed shoot from the loft above, a saddle room, a gighouse (now a garage), and an attic room and loft. Many original fittings are present.
Two rectangular game larders stand close to the shore - the larger designed for deer and the smaller for birds. They are constructed of random stylised rubble with piended slated roofs, and have interior tiled-lined walls and all original fittings.
