Description

Wyvis Lodge is a shooting lodge dated 1886. It is an asymmetrical, medium-sized building with gabled elements. The exterior is constructed of stylised random grey rubble with ribbon pointing at ground floor level, and a rendered first floor featuring mock timber framing with stippled infill. Finely tooled contrasting sandstone dressings are present. A wide verandah, supported by timber columns, encloses the ground floor on the east and south sides, and an entrance is located within a projecting porch on the east elevation. The windows are mullioned and transomed, and there are shaped and corniced end and ridge stacks. The roof is covered in Welsh slate.

Inside, the lodge retains its original panelling throughout both the ground and first floors, along with original chimney pieces on both levels. A balustraded staircase rises from a panelled hall to the first-floor landing. Notable chimney pieces are found in recessed alcoves in the ground-floor drawing and dining rooms, and in the master bedroom on the first floor; the drawing room fireplace features an ochre marble surround with the initials “WS”. A projecting “Tudor” style chimney piece is located in the hall. Some first-floor panelling has been painted white, certain window reveals incorporate mirrored panels, and sections of ground-floor panelling in the rear passage and gun room feature inlaid deerhide. Ribbed plaster ceilings are present in the drawing room, dining room and master bedroom.

The stables are a single-storey and attic structure built using similar materials to the lodge. Accommodation is provided for four horses with stalls and a feed shoot from the loft above. There is also a saddle room, a gighouse (now a garage), and an attic room and loft. Many original fittings remain.

Two rectangular game larders stand close to the shore; the larger is intended for deer and the smaller for birds. They are constructed of random stylised rubble with piended slated roofs. The interiors are tiled lined, and all fittings are present.

Wyvis Lodge occupies a commanding site on the western end of Loch Glass. It was built by and for Walter Shoolbred, of the cabinet-making firm of Shoolbred. The internal panelling was created by the Shoolbred family firm, and some Shoolbred furniture remains within the lodge. All building materials were transported by steamer from the eastern end of Loch Glass.
