Description
This is an 1853 gate lodge located at Forse House. It is an asymmetrical two-story building constructed from coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. A projecting gable is present on the southeast bay, incorporating a gabled porch that rises the full height of the building in the corner. The entrance is topped by a depressed arch with facetted jambs, the details of which are blocked at the imposts; decorative detailing is visible in the spandrels. The entrance has a studded panelled door, and a plaque is positioned above the door, bearing a carved Sutherland cat and the initials GS (George Sutherland) and MS.
A gabled bay on the west side features a canted bay window on the ground floor, with crenellation above. Hoodmoulds are present above the ground floor windows, and the windows contain two panes of glazing. The building has simple bargeboards and a central ridge stack rising from a slate roof.
The gate is defined by a pair of square, tooled ashlar gate piers with chamfered angles and shallow moulded pyramidal caps. Low, coped quadrants support spearhead cast-iron railings and matching terminal piers.
