Description
The Nottingham Mains Steading is a large farm complex dated 1842, originally serving as a mains farm to Forse House. It is constructed of rubble with tooled rubble dressings.
The main south front features a slightly advanced central gabled bay with a large round-headed arch, providing access into the inner court. Above the arch is a datestone and an oculus. Flanking this central bay are paired basket-arched cart-bays, with the rightmost bay being wider. Single doorways are positioned in the outer bays, and there are six blocked loft vents. The roof is slate-covered, with end stacks.
Flanking the main block are two single-storey, three-bay cottages with attics. Each cottage has a central door flanked by bipartites, and piended dormers are located in the outer bays. The windows are 4-pane sashes, and the cottages have end stacks and slate roofs.
Behind the main front lies a large internal court. To the rear are byres and stables on the east and west sides, and a long crowstepped barn runs along the north side. The east gable of the barn has been altered and is in poor condition. All buildings within the court have slate roofs. A datestone is inscribed with "Erected by John Sutherland 1842".
