Description

Cawdor Parish Church was built in 1619 and enlarged in 1830-31. It is a cruciform church with a tower incorporated into the south gable. The exterior features harl pointed rubble with ashlar dressings. An entrance porch straddles the southeast re-entrant and has a moulded pointed-headed arch supported by heavy corbelled engaged columns. There are additional pointed-headed, hood-moulded entrances in the centre of the north, east, and west gables, with similarly detailed gallery windows above and long Y-tracery windows on each elevation. The centre south gable has a hoodmoulded three-light plate traceried window from 1619, featuring simple carved decorative detailing on the mullions. A square tower, also from 1619, rises above with central slit vents and an unusually decorated corbel table supporting a crenellated wall walk. Above this is a later single-stage square belfry, likely added in 1830, with round-headed louvred windows on each face, a pyramidal slate roof, and a weathercock.

The north gable apex features a corniced stack, with cross finials at the east and west and crowsteps, all under a slate roof. Inside, the church has a T-plan layout with a minister's room and tower base filling the south gable. The interior includes north-east and west aisles that are all galleried, featuring Gothic detailing on the panelled fronts and pulpit, with all fittings dating from 1903.

The burial ground is enclosed by a rubble wall with entrances on the north and south flanked by simple gate piers, containing 18th and 19th-century gravestones. A fine wrought-iron lantern, likely from the early 19th century, is mounted on a wooden post at the junction of the church paths to the south of the building.
