Description

The Free Church of Scotland on High Street in Fort William was built in 1846. It is a rectangular building oriented north and south, consisting of a single storey with a two-storey elevation at the north to accommodate the sloping site. The south front features three windows and doors located in the outer bays. The exterior is constructed from tooled square rubble, with tooled granite ashlar dressings. The entrances in the outer bays are segmental headed and have simple plank doors with long hinges. The central bays contain three pointed-headed windows.

The north elevation has three similar windows, along with three square-headed windows symmetrically placed in a raised basement below, flanked by a door in the east bay. There is also a further narrow window in the west outer bay that is a blocked door. A gallery window is present in the east gable, and the building features multi-pane glazing throughout.

At the apex of the east gable, there is a bellcote with a stumpy facetted dome topped with a shaped finial. The west apex has a squat coped stack, and the roof has triangular skews covered with slate.

In front of the south elevation, which faces High Street, there is a low coped rubble retaining wall. This is complemented by a pair of plain square gate piers with pointed pyramidal caps, a pair of cast-iron gates, and matching cast-iron spearhead railings.
