Description
Gruinards Lodge is a two-story shooting lodge dating from 1896-7, designed by A Maitland and Sons of Tain. The asymmetrical design incorporates Scottish Baronial detailing and applied timber decoration to the gables, creating a picturesque composition. The lodge is constructed from dark bullfaced rubble stone with contrasting ashlar sandstone dressings. A prominent four-story tower, with crenellations and shaped merlons, rises from the main block, and has an attached turret containing a staircase at the upper levels. A four-centred arched entrance, hooded and with a 1897 datestone above, is at ground floor level. Two-story, multi-gabled ranges extend from the tower, diminishing in size towards the service areas.
To the east of the tower is a wide bay featuring a two-story, off-centre canted bay beneath a large gable, connected to the tower by a balcony. To the southwest are two angled bays; one is canted and corbelled over the ground floor with a gable, and the other is canted with a piended roof. A further bay faces west, incorporating a large stack rising through it. A lower service range extends to the northwest.
Most windows are mullioned, except within the service wing. The lodge has corniced stacks and a slate roof.
The interior features a staircase to the first floor within a panelled hall, and retains other contemporary details such as a panelled library and bookcases.
The architect W L Carruthers of Inverness advertised for tenders in 1889. It's likely that either Carruthers’s design was subsequently overseen by A Maitland, or that his plans were incorporated into Maitland's.
