Description
The Brewers House, located at 22 Mansons Lane in Thurso, dates from around 1800. It consists of a continuous southwest-facing range that includes a 2-storey, 3-bay brewer's house and a 3-storey, 6-bay brewery, both having the same roof height. The brewery features a gable end facing Riverside Place, with a 2-storey single bay return elevation flanking the entrance to the former hollow square. There is also a further single and 2-storey truncated range that flanks the Riverside Place entrance, with the southeast portion (23 Riverside Place) being restored and rendered. The exterior is finished with harl pointed pinned rubble, while No 22 Mansons Lane has a central door and first-floor windows only in the outer bays, along with single ground and first-floor windows in the return northwest elevation. The building has end and ridge stacks, and No 24 Mansons Lane features mainly regular fenestration with smaller windows on the ground and second floors. There are two entrances at the upper end of the building near the brewer's house, with symmetrical fenestration on the first and second floors of the gable end, a blocked door at the base, and a later inserted window. A large door is located in the return wing, and there are remains of a forestair at the rear. The building has crowstepped gables and primarily corrugated iron roofs, although some Caithness slating remains on the Riverside Place elevations.
