Description
The property comprises a house and a walled garden dating back to the early 19th century. The house itself is of various builds, with its core dating to around 1750, and a substantial south-facing front added between 1837 and 1838, designed by William Robertson of Elgin. Further alterations and additions were made in 1901, including a service wing to the east gable.
The south front is of polished ashlar, while the sides and rear are harled with polished ashlar margins and dressings, a characteristic also found on the 1901 additions. The symmetrical south front is two storeys high with a raised basement. A shallow advanced central bay features a tetrastyle portico with Ionic columns. The doorway is flanked by narrow side lights, and there are long windows on the ground floor. A band course separates the ground and first floors, and panelled angle pilasters add detail. Deep eaves and a moulded cornice run around the building, extending onto the gables. Low, square chimneys are centrally positioned and linked by a continuous cornice, supported by consoles.
The rear block exhibits long and short detailing to angles and some windows, and has an ashlar raised basement. A full-height canted bay window, likely dating from 1901, is centrally positioned at the rear and projects, featuring French windows opening onto a terrace. The windows are predominantly laid-pane, with the rear canted bay using margined glass. Corniced stacks rise from the roof, which is covered in piended slate.
Inside, the house features simple corniced ceilings and mid-19th century fireplaces. A staircase from the early 20th century has turned wooden balusters. The walled garden is of the early 19th century and is enclosed by a wall with a tooled ashlar coping.
The house was originally known as Moniack or Easter Moniack, and was the home of the Fraser family of Reelig. An initial house was built by James Fraser, 12th of Reelig, and the south front was added by James Baillie Fraser, 15th of Reelig.
