Description

This is a two-storey, symmetrical, three-bay house dating from 1776, originally built as a manse for Wardlaw Parish Church of Scotland in Kirkhill. Around 1825-30, a rear addition of equal size was constructed, creating a double-pile dwelling. The original 1776 section is harled and features painted tooled ashlar margins. The central bay projects forward and has a gable; the original entrance, once central, is now masked by a later Roman Doric portico. Flanking the portico are enlarged bay windows that fill in the re-entrant angles, each containing three windows divided by slender wooden pilasters and framed by bolder pilasters, paired at the outer bays. A gablet window sits in the attic, along with an apex stack.

The rear addition mirrors the front, also with a symmetrical three-bay layout and a central door masked by a later lean-to timber porch. The windows have varied glazing patterns, predominantly 12 panes at the front and 16 panes at the rear. The roof is slate-covered, with coped end stacks.

Historical references can be found in The Statistical Account (1792, p.118) and the New Statistical Account (1841, p.461).
