Description

Balblair House is a three-storey and attic house dating from around 1800, with a later 19th-century three-storey wing to the rear. The house is set against a slope and has a regular three-bay south-facing frontage, with the entrance and flanking principal rooms located on the first floor. The exterior is constructed from harl-pointed rubble with red, tooled and polished ashlar dressings. A central, square porch fronts the building, and the window arrangement is symmetrical, with three small swept dormers in the roof. The west gable is bowed, featuring a bowed piended roof, a tripartite window on the ground floor, and three windows each on the first and second floors.

A three-storey, two-bay wing projects from the rear, with upper floor windows slightly set back under gablets. The original house has 12-pane glazing, while the later wing has 4-pane glazing. The main house has a piended roof with paired ridge stacks, and the later wing has an end stack and a slated gabled roof.

Inside the original house, a simple, curved staircase leads to the upper floors. The dining and drawing rooms feature delicate ceiling cornices. The dining room has a carved chimneypiece, believed to be of French origin. Flanking engaged columns are present on the drawing room chimneypiece.
