Description
This is a cylindrical dovecote, dated 1783. It stands on a sloping site above the driveway, near the ruinous Newton House. The dovecote is constructed of harled rubble with tooled ashlar margins, and a rubble basecourse featuring a half-round step leading to the entrance. A lintel above the doorway is dated 1783. A string course runs between the doorway and the wallhead. The roof is conical, covered in slate and topped with a cast-iron weather vane. A small, south-facing dormer window has two rows of flight holes.
Inside, the walls are lined with 227 tooled rubble nesting boxes. A central potence pole remains, with an iron pin at its base and apex, corresponding to a slot in the cross beam. The base plinth is likely buried beneath accumulated floor rubble. A ladder formerly hung from the central arm of the potence, which could be rotated to allow for the collection of young pigeons for consumption.
