Description

Reelig House is a house of various builds dating to around 1750, with a symmetrical South frontage added in 1837-8, designed by William Robertson of Elgin. Later alterations and additions occurred in 1901, including a service wing at the East gable. The South facade is of polished ashlar, while the flanks and rear are harled with polished ashlar margins and dressings, mirroring the materials used in the 1901 additions. The South front is symmetrical, with two storeys over a raised basement, and features an advanced central bay. A tetrastyle Ionic portico fronts the central entrance, flanked by narrow side lights. Long, ground floor windows are present; a band course separates the ground and first floors; panelled angle pilasters are visible, along with a deep eaves band and a moulded cornice that returns onto the gables. Low, square stacks are centrally placed, linked by a continuous cornice and supported by consoles.

The rear block displays long and short detailing to some angles and windows, also with an ashlar raised basement. A canted bay window, likely dating to 1901, rises the full height of a central, projecting rear bay and has French windows opening onto a terrace. The rear canted bay has mainly lying-pane glazing. The roof is covered with piended slate, and corniced stacks are present.

The interior features simple corniced ceilings, mid-19th century chimneypieces, and an early 20th century main staircase with turned wooden balusters.

The walled garden, dating to the early 19th century, is surrounded by a coping of tooled ashlar.

The house was formerly known as Moniack or Easter Moniack and was the home of the Frasers of Reelig. An earlier house was built by James Fraser, 12th of Reelig, with the South frontage added by James Baillie Fraser, 15th of Reelig.
