Description
The Head Post Office, located in the Market Place on High Street in Wick, was designed by W T Oldrieve from the HM Office of Works in 1912 and showcases the Scottish Vernacular Revival style. The building is constructed from tall, bullfaced rubble with ashlar dressings and features three storeys with five asymmetrical bays. To the west, there is a single-storey wing that includes two arches.
The façade includes two architraved doors topped with small raised decorative pediments, while the three middle bays are slightly corbelled above the ground floor, culminating in a pronounced crow-stepped gable. The second-floor window heads display strap work detail, and there is one pedimented wallhead dormer. Similar decorative features are present on the river frontage. The roof is made of graded Caithness slabs and includes gable chimneys. The river front has a simplified treatment due to the steeply sloping site, which is enclosed by a high rubble wall. Additionally, there is a single-storey building over a basement with a crow-stepped design at the rear, facing Victoria Place.
