Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 1 Bridge Street in Wick, was built around 1830. This classical building is a three-storey, three-bay freestanding banking house, featuring an additional ground floor bay to the south over a basement, and it faces the river. The Bridge Street elevation is constructed of ashlar stone, while the other sides are made of rubble.
The Bridge Street front showcases rusticated quoins and outer pilasters, with an advanced ground floor centre bay that serves as the base for a pair of outer piers and Ionic columns. These columns frame a central window and support an entablature that stretches across the entire front. The front features an architraved window with cornices on the first floor, a dentilled cornice with a blocking course above the second floor, and corniced end stacks.
To the south, the building has a projecting three-bay river frontage topped with four urns on the parapet, along with a later added canted bay window on the first floor. The roof is covered with piended slate.
