Description

The Ewen Maclachlan Obelisk and Gateway are located in The Craigs Burial Ground in Fort William. This irregularly shaped burial ground is enclosed by a simple coped wall, with a short section of crenelated walling flanking the gateway. Within the burial ground, there are various tombs from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The granite obelisk, erected in 1847 in memory of Ewen MacLachlan, who lived from 1775 to 1822, features a square corniced plinth with inset inscribed panels on each face, resting on a stepped base. The obelisk itself is made of grey granite ashlar. The gateway, originally constructed in 1690 and re-erected in 1896, has a round-headed entrance arch that is keystoned and pedimented, with blocked imposts. The gateway is made of all tooled granite and includes an inscribed shield-shaped panel above the arch.
