Description
The Obelisk and Burial Ground at Balavil, dating from around 1796, features a short obelisk made from various materials. It has a white marble plinth adorned with a relief portrait of James MacPherson on the north side and a weeping woman on the south side. The plinth is topped with a grey marble cornice, which supports a slate obelisk that has a white marble crest on the north facet and an urn at the apex.
The burial ground includes a circular burial enclosure from the later 19th century, surrounded by decorative spearhead cast-iron railings set on a low ashlar coped rubble wall. There are also two slender cast-iron piers that support a matching pair of gates.
Within the burial ground, there are various MacPherson tombstones, the earliest of which is dated 1876.
