Description
5-7 High Street in Tain is a building dating from around 1820. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring four wide bays and is constructed of painted ashlar stone.
The ground floor showcases broad outer channeled pilasters, which continue as paneling on the first floor. The shop front is well-designed and symmetrical, with pilasters and aproned panels beneath the windows. The original central door has been blocked and replaced with a window. The first-floor windows are framed with architraves and have bracketed sills.
The building has an eaves cornice adorned with small pendant moldings between the bays. There are two original piended dormers and end stacks, topped with a slate roof. A notable feature is a fine gilt pestle and mortar sign mounted on a wrought iron bracket.
