The Lodge And Gateway, Thurso Castle

The Lodge and Gateway at Thurso Castle, possibly designed by architect Donald Leed between 1870 and 1880, features an exaggerated baronial arched gateway that connects to a square gate lodge via a crenellated wall. The structure is built from sneck coursed rubble with ashlar dressings.

The lodge is a square, two-storey, two-bay dwelling with a square angle turret that projects at the southeast corner, rising one storey above the wallhead. It has corbelled and crenellated wallheads, along with corbelled and crenellated angle bartizans that conceal flues. The extensive cable moulding decoration includes angle margins, and the window lintels are adorned with dogtooth decoration, featuring two-pane glazing.

A modern sun parlour has been added to the south elevation at ground floor level, rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, with a crenellated wallhead leading to a flat roof.

The gateway mirrors the lodge's style, showcasing a cusped high round-headed arch flanked by buttresses, with a corbelled and crenellated wallhead and corbelled and crenellated angle bartizans. The quadrants are coped rubble, with terminal end piers designed as bartizans.
