Kiln And Fish House, Kippering House, Shore Street, Thurso

The building is a mid-19th century kippering house that includes a fish house, kiln, yard, store, and shop. It is primarily constructed of rubble with tooled rubble dressings.

The kiln is a tall structure made of rubble, featuring a weatherboard end that is louvred and a long louvred ridge vent on the upper portion of its long elevations. The fish house is adjacent to the kiln and consists of three bays with six-pane sash windows and roof lights beneath a slate roof. It also has a gable loft entrance.

The yard is enclosed by a high harled rubble wall, with simple gatepiers flanking the entrance. The store is a two-storey rectangular building made of rubble, positioned at right angles to the fish house. On the ground floor, a modern narrow three-bay shop has been inserted, flanked by original eight-pane windows in the outer bays on both the ground and first floors. There is a central first-floor gable loft door with a hoist that projects above.
