Description
Newsham Lodge is a gate lodge built in the early 19th century, possibly designed by J. Wyattville. It is constructed of ashlar and features a picturesque design with unbalanced elements. The main entrance consists of an off-centre four-centred arched gateway, with a smaller pedestrian entrance to the right, set back against a curtain wall that ends in a small two-storey facetted tower. To the left of the archway is a projecting facetted stair turret, a glazed lancet window, and a projecting three-storey tower with a battered base, three string courses, and a taller square stair turret at one angle. The ground floor window of this tower has a pointed and moulded arch with moulded reveals; the two upper windows are similar but have square heads. Beyond the tower to the left is an additional section of curtain wall. The tops of all curtain walls and towers are embattled, featuring heavily coped merlons and embrasures. A decorative panel of arms is located on the third floor of the principal tower, while the Anderson cypher is positioned above the pedestrian entrance.
