Description

West Cottage, formerly Mrs Mackay’s House, is part of a circa 1870 south-facing terrace of three houses connected to Tigh a Mhuilin to the west. The two eastern houses are linked internally to form a single dwelling, and the westernmost house is also joined internally to Tigh a Mhuilin.

Mrs Mackay’s House comprises three single-storey and attic, three-bay houses built of rubble with tooled dressings. Each has a central door, and three gabletted dormers project from the wallheads. The windows are timber sash windows with four panes, and there are ridge and end stacks. The roofs are slate covered. A modern single-storey, single-bay addition has been made to the east gable.

Tigh a Mhuilinn, dating to the late 19th century, is a single-storey and attic house with a slightly higher roofline and is also a three-bay house. It is constructed of rubble with cast concrete dressings. A central door is flanked by bipartite windows. Two bipartite dormers rise through the wallhead within bargeboarded gables. The windows have two panes, and the house has end stacks. The roof is slate.

The terrace faces south and overlooks the Dunbeath Water. The buildings are part of an estate village and have no street numbers.
