Description
Little Tarrel Castle, located at Rockfield Farm, dates back to the late 16th century and incorporates earlier fragments. It has undergone two later alterations, likely in the mid 18th century and early 19th century.
This small, two-storey L-plan tower house features a single wide bay on each inner flank of the L, with a round-headed plain chamfered doorway situated in the southwest-facing re-entrant. The building is constructed of harled rubble with ashlar dressings. There is a round shothole providing cover for the entrance, and splayed oblong gun loops are found elsewhere, including on the first floor. A re-used datestone from 155? is positioned as a cill on the south elevation, and there is a slop sink located on the ground floor of the east elevation. The castle also features crowsteps, one skewputt with a shield in relief at the northwest corner, end stacks, a slate roof, and a stone ridge.
