Station And Pier, Kyle Of Lochalsh

This is a late 19th-century island platform railway station and pier, opened in 1897 to the design of Murdoch Paterson, engineer to the Highland Railway. The station buildings are single-storey and timber-framed, partly built on a pier extending into the Kyle of Lochalsh. A long, ramped roadway provides access to the island platform. The buildings are founded on a single course of stone, with the walls horizontally boarded. The station has eleven main bays, with narrower bays at each end. Cast-iron fluted pilasters with stylised acanthus capitals mark each bay, supporting brackets and a canopy. Windows are mainly bipartite (two-pane), but some are tripartite (three-pane), and two are projecting V-plan windows. The interior is lined with vertical match-board tongue and groove panelling. The roof is piended and slate-covered, with brick stacks. The scale of the station and its facilities exemplifies the site’s importance as a pierhead station.
