Lochardil Hotel, Startherrick Road, Inverness

The Lochardil Hotel, located on Startherrick Road in Inverness, was designed by John Rhind and built between 1876 and 1878. The building features snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and is laid out in an L-plan, consisting of a two-storey main block and a one-storey service block with an attic.

The entrance front of the main block has three bays, with the center bay slightly advanced and featuring a round-arched doorpiece. The right bay is also slightly more advanced than the center. All three bays are topped with gablets, and the first-floor windows have Elizabethan pediments. To the right of the main block, there is a crenellated one-storey screen wall that connects to a circular tower. Other elevations of the building feature first-floor windows with gableted dormerheads, and the corners are bowed and corbelled to square just below the eaves level. A modern glazed addition has been added to the south side.

Inside, the hotel boasts a lavish interior, highlighted by an impressive stair hall. The dining room walls are adorned with painted tapestries that are copies of the Gobelins tapestries depicting the History of Esther, which were originally in Castle Rosque and have been cut to fit their current location.
