Description
5-8 Victoria Place in Mallaig is a group of four blocks of railwaymen's houses, built in the 19th century. These two-storey buildings are constructed of random rubble and feature concrete lintels. Each block contains four flats, with entrances to the upper flats located at the front and to the lower flats at the ends. The blocks are arranged back to back, with a shared drying green in between.
The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a door and a small four-pane window at each end, along with single-storey canted bays in the centre. Above the bays are three-light mullioned windows, which have gablets above them. Originally, all front windows were sash and case, with six-pane sashes.
The rear elevation does not have any doors or bays, but features paired windows with gables in the centre on both floors, and single ground floor windows at the outer edges, all originally sash and case with six-pane sashes.
There are some window replacements that are out of character on all elevations. The gabled roofs are covered with Scotch slates and have open eaves with barge boards on the gables and gablets.
