Description
This former hospital block, built in the early 20th century, showcases Scots renaissance ornamentation. It features a long, symmetrical northern elevation facing the driveway, with additional symmetrical ranges at the rear, including a long south-facing range from the 1920s and 1930s, known as Jura and Melfort, which has now been demolished.
The front of the building has a three-storey central section with a porch and dormer heads above the main eaves level, flanked by crow-stepped outer gables. Each of the two-storey, shallow recessed wings includes canted, balustraded semi-octagonal turrets that have stepped stair windows. The structure is built of ashlar stone with contrasting dressings, and most windows feature mullions and/or transoms with multi-paned glazing. The roofs are slate, with end and wall-head stacks.
The outer ranges are mostly single storey but maintain similar detailing and complex roof forms. The Jura and Melfort range had a tall single storey over a basement with an attic in a mansard style. It featured framed, multi-paned windows with a symmetrical design, a wide central piece topped with a pediment over a tall round-arched window, and fully glazed flanking bays at ground level between stanchions, along with full-length balconies and terminal bays.
