Winton House, 9 Winton Drive, Glasgow

Winton House, located at 9 Winton Drive in Glasgow, is a B-listed villa designed by Robert Turnbull of Thomson and Turnbull around 1880. This two-storey and attic building has a square plan and features a full-height projecting service wing at the rear. The upper floors and roof were destroyed by fire around 1983, but the roof was reinstated in 1987.

The villa has a three-bay polished ashlar facade with projecting square windows on the ground floor, which are flanked by pilaster mullions. These windows surround a portico that features Thomsonesque columns in antis and a tripartite doorway with double-leaf doors. Above, a full-width balcony supported by the projecting windows and columns is adorned with antefixae and cast-iron railings. On the first floor, there are three bipartite windows with pilaster mullions and plate glass sashes. The facade includes a band course at the first floor cills and a string course at the eaves. The flanks and rear of the building are constructed of stugged ashlar and feature single and bipartite windows. Corniced wallhead stacks complete the exterior.

Inside, most of the ground floor plasterwork remains intact, showcasing elongated egg and dart cornices. An Ionic screen leads to the hall, but the staircase was destroyed in the fire. The interior also features elaborate carved timber doorcases with block pediments.

The property is enclosed by a low stugged ashlar wall with coping, and there is a pair of elaborate painted ashlar gatepiers, which are corniced and topped with ball finials.
