Description

This is a mid-19th century building consisting of a group of three tenements arranged in a “V” shape at the junction of Maryhill Road and St George’s Road, Glasgow. The central element is a four-storey tenement containing a bank, flanked to the right by a three-storey tenement and to the left by a lower four-storey tenement. All three sections have shops at ground level.

The building is constructed of yellow sandstone ashlar, with a prominent cornice above the shop fronts, cill courses, an eaves band and a cornice at the roofline. The windows are architraved with bracketed cills. First-floor windows feature consoled cornices, with paterae detail to the friezes and lintel band course. Cornices are also present to the second-floor windows of the Maryhill Road elevations and to the first bays of the St George's Road elevations. All windows are modern pivot type.

The bank frontage, dating from around 1930, has a prominent design featuring Doric fluted columns dividing bays, with channelled masonry supporting a Doric entablature. Large windows are set within each bay, with casket-like aprons beneath. A door is set within a polished granite architrave with a crest over a cornice, all framed by Doric columns and entablature; two corniced name frames are on the return walls. Above the door, a four-light canted window with panelled pilasters is topped with a similarly detailed parapet. The return elevations feature mainly bipartite windows, with a tripartite window in the northwest bay of the Maryhill Road elevation and three closely spaced windows in the centre of the St George's Road elevation.

The section at 4-40 Maryhill Road is a four-storey, sixteen-bay tenement. The shop fronts have been largely altered but retain a tripartite timber front with fascia and a segmental-arched entrance bay to number 4, which is a public house, known as Castle Vaults. The fenestration above is grouped symmetrically, with single and bipartite windows consistent across each floor of a bay. Cill courses connect the bank tenement to the lower bays, incorporating fluted and ball-finialled blocks. A lower tenement adjoins the outer left.

The section at 285-297 St George’s Road is a three-storey, five-bay tenement where the shop fronts have been altered at ground level. Channelled pilasters divide the bays to the left, and quoins are present to the right. The fenestration is grouped 1-1-3, with tripartite windows to each floor in the outer bays, bipartites to the centre and bay to the left of the centre, and a single window in the bay to the right of the centre. A blank, harled, gabled return elevation is to the right, and within the bank, the interior retains original timber counters with guilloche moulding and a coffered ceiling.
