Description

20-40 Gordon Street in Glasgow is a four-storey classical commercial building designed by Peddie and Kinnear in 1873. The structure features modern shops on the ground floor and consists of 16 x 16 bays, constructed from polished ashlar. All windows are sash and case with plate glass. The entrance at No 30 Gordon Street is consoled and pedimented, adorned with an acroterion and antefixae.

The ground floor has a cornice and retains remnants of the original shop fronts. Above, there are superimposed anta orders; the first floor has a stylised pilastrade with wider angle pilasters on a continuous podium. The second floor features a continuous podium pilastrade, while the third floor has a pilastrade with recessed, two-light windows that include pilaster mullions. The main entablature is topped with a cavetto cornice. There is a splayed wallhead stack facing West Nile Street, and the cornice returns one bay to the west at the northmost bay on West Nile Street. The rear elevation has corniced wallhead stacks made of brick.
