Description
This is a classical house built around 1841, located at 56 Partickhill Road, Glasgow. It is two stories high with three bays and an additional single-storey recessed entrance bay on the east side, along with attached outbuildings. The house features polished ashlar stone on the front and squared rubble on the rear elevations. The windows are sash and case style, set in architraves, with plate glass on the front and 12-pane glazing on the rear, and there is a plinth at the base.
The main elevation facing south has a Greek Ionic central portico with a cornice and blocking course, flanked by console corniced windows above the central bay. The east return has a single-storey entrance with two arched windows on the sides. There is a projecting side entrance to the rear garden, which is corniced and features a sculpted lion couchant. The axial stacks on the east and west returns are splayed and corniced. The rear elevation consists of three bays with a central round-headed narrow stair light.
Inside, there is a Corinthian columned hall screen with responds, an elaborately coffered and corniced vestibule and hall, and a stone staircase with a cast-iron baluster. The doors are console corniced, and there is a marble chimneypiece in the left upper room at the angle.
The outbuildings are connected to the house by a pedimented keyblocked archway that features a sculpted eagle. The outbuildings include double-leaf wooden gates with panelled fretwork in the upper part, plain single-storey buildings, and a loft with a pigeon hole gable, stone coping, and a slate roof. The property is enclosed by a coped boundary wall with cast-iron gates and piers.
