Description

65 Queen Street is a former terraced classical house built around 1790. It has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a three-bay façade constructed of polished Craigleith sandstone ashlar. The ground floor features channelled rustication and flat long and short quoins. On the left side, there is a pilastered tripartite doorpiece with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. The first-floor windows are adorned with moulded architraves and cornices, and there is a panelled band course above. The cornice has a plain frieze. The house also has two bowed dormers from the early 19th century, with the larger one on the right featuring a canted tripartite window and slate hanging.

The rear elevation is made of coursed rubble and has three storeys with two bays. It includes tripartite windows and a piend-roofed dormer on the left, while the right bay is advanced.

The building has timber sash and case 12-pane windows, ashlar coped mutual skews, and dressed stone mutual stacks, though the stack to the rear has been completely removed. The roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the layout is straightforward with some decorative features, although the chimneypieces have been removed, and the space has largely been adapted for office use. There is a straight longitudinal cantilevered stair at the center with square iron banisters, and a cupola that has been screened off by late 19th-century glazed and plastered infill. At the ground floor, the rear right room has an apsidal end. There are links at the ground and second floors to No 66, and at the second floor to No 64.

The property also features cast-iron spearhead railings and a single lamp standard to the right of the steps, which are in keeping with Nos 64 and 66-67.

Additionally, there is a mews building at 37 Young Street Lane North, which is a two-storey coursed rubble structure with a later pend and garage at ground level.
