Gasholder

This listing describes a pair of gasholders located next to the Forth and Clyde Canal on the former gasworks site. Gasholder Number 4, built in 1893 by Barrowfield Ironworks Ltd for the Corporation of Glasgow Gas Department, features a Type 32 frame. It stands 41.5 metres tall and has 26 steel lattice standards, supported by three tiers of steel lattice box girders and diagonal bracings. The gasholder includes three telescopic steel riveted and welded sheeted shells, set in a sunken tank made of brickwork and lined with puddled clay, which measures 73 metres in diameter and 14 metres in depth. Repairs to Gasholder Number 4 included work on the access stairways and walkways in 1970, as well as selected frame girders, guides, and tie replacements following fire damage. Additional external framing repairs occurred in 1973, and some column guide replacements were made in 1999.

Gasholder Number 5, built in 1900 by the same company, is of the same type and design but has a slightly different specification. It has a circular frame that is 44.5 metres tall and consists of 24 steel lattice standards. The sunken tank for this gasholder is 71 metres in diameter and 15 metres deep. Repairs to Gasholder Number 5 included crown and cup replacements and overhauls in 1984, as well as repairs to the middle lift grips and overhauling of two crown rollers in 2000.

It is noted that the shells and the tank of both Gasholder Number 4 and Gasholder Number 5 are excluded from the listing under Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.
