Description
The Canal Restaurant, located at 300 Bearsden in Temple, Glasgow, is a Modern Movement office block designed by George Laird of John Laird and Son around 1938. This building features two and three stories, with part of it functioning as a basement due to the road's elevation. It is constructed of red brick and includes concrete lintel bands.
The northwest elevation showcases a two-storey, three-bay entrance block that is elevated above the road, with a storey below. The central bay features a brick porch with brick reeding around a chamfered surround, leading to a recessed door accessed by steps. Above this entrance is a flat concrete canopy that supports an engaged circular tower with a tall window, topped with a concrete coping ring and a parapet. Regular windows flank the entrance.
On the southwest and northeast elevations, the taller entrance block extends towards the front, featuring an oculus on the upper floor to the southwest and a narrow window to the northeast. The central section has four lower, three-storey bays with paired windows at the rear, windows at the front, and narrower windows in the penultimate bays. The southeast elevation includes a sliding machinery door at the center of the ground floor, with a row of four narrow windows above, grouped to the left.
The windows are designed with horizontal panes and metal glazing, featuring three panes on top with a pivoting pane in the center. The entrance has boarded timber, two-leaf doors.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
