Description
The building comprises a primary school and a presbytery, constructed in the 1910s and 1880s respectively. The primary school, designed by Bruce & Hay in 1910, is a five-story building with a basement, and a rectangular plan. It is built of bull-faced red sandstone with red sandstone ashlar dressings. The design includes a base course, cill courses at the basement, 1st and 3rd floors, aprons beneath the 2nd-floor windows, and a castellated parapet. Gabled buttresses define the two-bay central entrance and three-bay outer entrances. The central entrance extends to the 4th floor, forming a kneeled gable with arrow slits, a hoodmoulded quatrefoil, and a cross at the apex, flanked by pinnacles. Window openings are square-headed with relieving arches at ground floor level, and segmental-arched windows at the 1st floor. Arcaded, segmental-arched windows feature in the central and outer entrance bays, while arcaded, square-headed openings are present on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The east (entrance) elevation is near-symmetrical, with an 18-bay facade. The central gabled entrance features volutes above stepped consoles, a cross at its apex, and a quatrefoil. A segmental arch provides the surround to a two-leaf timber door and a deep fanlight. Single windows are located to the left at ground floor, with regular fenestration above. The presbytery, designed by Pugin & Pugin in 1882, is a three-story and attic building with a rectangular plan. It is constructed of bull-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, band and cill courses at the ground, 1st, and 2nd floors, and a banded parapet. The east (entrance) elevation features a central, arched, keystoned entrance with a timber door, a single window above at the 1st floor, and a tripartite opening at the 2nd floor. This tripartite window incorporates a central crocketted niche, flanking windows, a hoodmould, and a round-traceried, hoodmoulded window set within a gable, terminating in a cross finial. Bipartite windows flank the ground, 1st, and 2nd floors, with single windows at the attic level. The presbytery has boarded, plate glass and four-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof, and corner wallhead stacks. The interiors of both buildings were not inspected in 1999. Stone and iron gatepiers, gates, railings and a boundary wall are present. A polygonal-plan stone gatepier and iron gatepiers are located to the right of the presbytery, alongside single and two-leaf iron gates, and iron railings atop a boundary wall. A higher boundary wall, a remnant of a demolished Pugin & Pugin church, is situated to the right. A linking boundary wall connects the school to the presbytery, featuring a hoodmoulded entrance, bipartite windows flanking, and a larger single window to the right. A high brick boundary wall encloses the school playground to Portman Street.
