Pollokshields Free Church West, 614-620 Shields Road, Glasgow

Pollokshields Free Church West, located at 614-620 Shields Road in Glasgow, was designed by W G Rowan of McKissack and Rowan between 1875 and 1879. It was originally built as a Free Church and is now known as Pollokshields West Church. The building features a Thomsonesque Greek architectural style and is situated on a corner site. It has a tall square tower at the corner, which has mostly blank walls below a decorative top stage and an open-worked domed lantern above. The three elevations of the church include an Ionic portico raised above a podium, a design also favored by Thomson. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with slate roofs and pediments adorned with anthemion finials. The shallow Doric portico facing Shields Road has a triple doorway. The square-ended chancel is not original and may date from 1923. The interior was remodeled in 1923 and features stained glass panels created by Alfred Webster and Nina Millar Davidson. Surrounding the church is a stone-built boundary wall with piers that display Egyptian-Greek ornamentation.
