Description

The gasworks site includes two frame-guided gasholders, numbered 1 and 2, located southwest of the site. These are of identical design and were built in 1903 by Barrowfield Iron Works Limited (for the iron and steelwork) and Messrs. R. McAlpine and Sons (for the tank excavation and brickwork), for the Glasgow Corporation, under the supervision of gasworks engineer William Foulis. The gasholders are Type 32 frame construction, with a three-tier circular frame rising to 46.5 metres in height. The frame consists of 30 I-section steel latticed frame standards, braced by four tiers of steel lattice girders and four tiers of cross-directional bracing ties. Three telescopic shells clad in riveted mild steel sheeting, up to 85 metres in diameter, sit within a sunken tank of brickwork and puddle clay, 15.5 metres deep.

Later repairs and alterations have been undertaken on the gasholders. No. 1 Gasholder had its crown and lift sheeting rebuilt in 1952-3, with cup plate and carriage overhauls in 1969 and 1980. Walkways and handrails were replaced in sections in 2008. Records indicate that column guide channels were strengthened in No. 2 Gasholder in 1970, and the middle cup lift repaired in 1992.

Midway between No. 2 Gasholder and the former offices stands a two-storey, late 20th-century former gasworks booster house and control building, dating to after 1967; this building no longer contains any booster equipment.

A separate, much later gasholder, No. 3, located northeast of the site, dates from 1969-70 and has a spiral guided design. This gasholder is of steel plate construction and represents a late example of its type.

Various brick and concrete ancillary buildings, primarily from the middle to late 20th century, are scattered across the site, along with modern semi-temporary structures and prefabricated portable buildings. Functional and redundant pipework, including large sections above ground, run across the site. A field of small, modern liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks is located towards the northeast.

The listing excludes the shells and tank of gasholders 1 and 2, No. 3 Gasholder, the Booster House, and all other structures and buildings on the gasworks site, with the exception of the Offices and Workshops, listed separately at category C.
