Description
(See also Offices and Workshops LB52457 on the gasworks site which are listed at category C.)
Two frame guided gasholders are located at the southwest of the site. No. 1 Gasholder and No. 2 Gasholder, of identical design, were built in 1903 by Barrowfield Iron Works Limited (iron and steel work) and Messrs. R. McAlpine and Sons (tank excavation and brickwork) for the Glasgow Corporation under supervision of William Foulis (gasworks engineer). The gasholders are of Type 32 frame. The three-tier circular frame is 46.5 metres in height and has 30 I-section steel latticed frame standards, braced by four tiers of steel lattice girders and four tiers of cross-directional bracing ties. Three telescopic mild steel-sheeted shells of riveted construction (up to 85 metres in diameter) are set in a sunken brickwork and puddle clay tank (15.5 metres deep).
There have been some later repairs and alterations to the gasholders. No. 1 Gasholder underwent crown and lift sheeting rebuild in 1952-3 with cup plate and carriage overhauls in 1969 and 1980. In 2008, sections of walkways and handrails were replaced. SNG archives note the following repairs to No. 2 Gasholder; column guide channels strengthened in 1970 and middle cup lift repaired in 1992.
Located midway between No. 2 Gasholder and the former offices, is a two-storey, later 20th century former gasworks booster house (and control building). It dates to after 1967 and no longer contains any booster equipment.
No. 3 Gasholder, located at the northeast of the site, dates from 1969-70 and is of spiral guided design. This much later gasholder, of steel plate construction, is a late example of its type.
Various brick and concrete construction ancillary buildings, mostly from middle to late 20th century are scattered across the site. Modern semi-temporary structures and 'portacabins' are also on site. Functional and redundant pipework, large sections located above ground, also run across the site. A field of small, modern LNG (liquefied natural gas) storage tanks are located towards the northeast of the site.
In accordance with Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997 the following are excluded from the listing: the shells and the tank of No. 1 Gasholder and No. 2 Gasholder. No. 3 Gasholder, Booster House and all other structures and buildings on the gasworks site (excepting Offices and Workshops LB52457 which are listed at category C).
