Description

A late 19th-century Italianate villa, located at 100 Acre Road, Glasgow, has been extended with 1960s additions. The villa is rectangular in plan and includes a three-stage tower. It is built of stugged sandstone with squared and snecked random stonework, and features an ashlar base course, dressings, a dividing band, and eaves courses. Mullions are also of ashlar construction.

The west (entrance) elevation features the tower set into and advanced from the northwest angle. A round-arched doorway, with voissoirs to the arch, is at the foot of the tower, leading to panelled double doors and a coloured glass fanlight. A cornice sits above the doorway. A window with a similar surround to the left return has been partly blocked by the 1960s extension. Bipartite windows are found on the first floor of the tower, with corbelled cornices, while the third stage has tripartite windows set above the eaves. To the right of the entrance are two bays, with a bipartite window at ground level in an advanced panel, featuring a cornice to the centre. Above this is a single window, and to the right, a full-height canted four-light window with a dividing cornice.

The south elevation displays two bays, masked to the left at ground level by later additions, with a canted window to the right, and two first-floor windows above.

The north elevation includes a three-bay tower to the outer right and a modern link to a billiard room, centered and to the right. Windows are present to the outer left bay and on the first floor.

The billiard room is a rectangular, single-storey space to the north of the tower, with a broad canted window to the west and a gambrel roof with rooflights and a ventilator; the rear is blank. The billiard room is connected to the main house by a 1960s link passage.

The windows are primarily four-pane and plate glass sash and case windows, with casements and fixed panes to the billiard room. Bracketed, overhanging eaves are present throughout. The roof is finished with piend and platform grey slate, with lead flashings. The tower has a shallow pyramidal roof with a weathervane finial. No chimney stacks are visible.

The interior includes a wainscot-panelled vestibule with a window seat and a three-seater gothic bench. A fireplace features an Ionic columned chimneypiece with a substantial Jacobean frieze and a panelled overmantel. Decorative plasterwork is also a notable feature.

A rubble coped rubble boundary wall runs along Acre Road, with ashlar piers that have chamfered arises and corniced pyramidal caps.

A much-altered service and stable block is situated close by to the rear, forming a service court.
