Description

266-268 Clyde Street in Glasgow is a Classical shop and office block built around 1860. It features seven bays, three storeys, and an attic. The building underwent interior alterations in 1901 and received new shop fronts, two additional upper storeys, and further interior adjustments, likely by architect J J Burnet, around 1920. The exterior is finished in cream sandstone ashlar, with squared and snecked sandstone on the sides and rear, and brick additions from 1920.

The south elevation has channelled ashlar at the ground level, with impost courses, dentil cornices, and moulded keystones. At the centre, there is a broad depressed archway leading to a vestibule with Arbroath stone steps, and a modern recessed doorway. The tripartite shop fronts on either side, dating from around 1920, feature mirrored designs with channelled pilasters, top-hopper upper windows, and fanlights, all topped with a cornice above the ground floor. Giant pilasters flank the centre bay on the first and second floors, with windows set in raised panels. Each floor has round-arched keystoned windows, with pilasters on the bays beside the centre. The first floor has a dentil cornice, while the second features an entablature. Paterae details are found between each window. The former attic floor serves as a base for the two later floors above, with an architraved window at the centre and three windows on each side, separated by pilasters. The two upper floors again have giant pilasters flanking the centre bay, with regular fenestration and tall windows on the penultimate storey. The cornice and parapet are topped with wallhead stacks flanking the centre bay.

On the north elevation facing Fox Street, there are two stair window bays at the centre, topped by a water tank, with evidence of former additions at the ground level. The remaining bays have near-regular fenestration, with bipartite windows on the outer left. The building is flanked by tenements on both the east and west sides. The later work includes plate glass sash and case windows and metal casements, with wrought-iron geometric window guards on the top floor, as well as wallhead and gablehead stacks.
