Swimming Pool and laundry, Former Greenfield Primary School, 29 Nimmo Drive, Govan

Dated 1901, Greenfield Primary School was designed by Steele and Balfour in 1899-1900 and constructed in 1901-1902 for the Govan Parish School Board. A date panel on the principal elevation bears the inscriptions 'Greenfield Public School', 'GOVAN PARISH' and 'SCHOOL BOARD'.

The red sandstone building is three storeys with a basement, arranged symmetrically with seven bays facing Nimmo Drive. The central three-bay section is flanked by slightly advanced, piended pavilions. The basement has arched, semi-sunken and rusticated openings. The main elevation features ashlar band courses, pilasters and quoins, with rusticated details, along with base and cill courses and dentilled eaves. The roof is covered with clay ridge tiling and has finials. Side and rear elevations are of squared and snecked stone with ashlar window surrounds and quoins to the angles. Most windows are 2 over 2 pane, with a horizontally set pane at the bottom.

There are flat-roofed, pedimented entrance blocks for boys (to the east) and infants and girls (to the west).

Adjoining to the southeast is a three-bay, two-storey, piended roof janitor's accommodation with segmental pedimented windows breaking the eaves.

A tall, square, two-stage boiler chimney stack projects to the south, octagonal in plan and corniced at the second stage.

Connected to the ground floor south of the school is an L-plan section including a former laundry (later used as a gymnasium), and a long, single-storey, rectangular-plan swimming pool block with bulls-eye windows in the gable ends. The pool block is constructed of squared and coursed sandstone with ashlar quoins.

A partial internal inspection in 2016 revealed a large, double-height central hall with a hammerbeam roof featuring timber trusses resting on stone corbels and a large skylight opening above. The hall is galleried at the first and second floors, with an atrium above. Walls are tiled, with a green border, up to dado height in public circulation and corridor areas, while classrooms are predominantly timber lined. Decorative scrolled stone consoles support each floor level of the central hall.

The swimming pool block includes a rectangular pool with white tiles and white painted brick walls. Changing cubicles are located under a blind arcade on the north wall, with shower facilities to the east. The pool area has simple, detailed iron roof supports on stone corbels and a timber lined ceiling.

The boundary is defined by low, coped stone walls with plain, cast iron railings, and square ashlar gatepiers at regular intervals, topped with large ball finials, to the east, north and west.
