Description
The Main Gate Lodge, located within Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy, was designed by J.W. Hislop and built in 1891. It is a single-storey building with an attic and is arranged in an L-plan, featuring a prominent corner tower. The exterior is constructed of rock-faced squared rubble, with contrasting red sandstone dressings. The windows have corniced tops and bracketed sills, incorporating stone transoms and mullions.
The northeast (entrance) elevation is characterised by a bay to the right of centre, which has a finialled gable and decorative timberwork within the gablehead. A lower projecting wing features a five-part, transomed bow window beneath a conical roof. A two-stage, engaged polygonal entrance tower is situated in the re-entrant angle to the left, with a window on the left return.
The entrance tower's first stage has a swept-roof porch with a decorative tympanum projecting to the northeast. It also has a quadripartite window on the return to its left, and a projecting wing adjoining to its right. A panelled timber door sits to the northeast, alongside a narrow window to the east. The second stage of the tower has a moulded cill course, with windows to the northeast and east, followed by a deep eaves course that gives way to a moulded cornice and a polygonal spire crowned with decorative wrought-iron weathervane.
The northwest elevation has a gable to the outer right with a canted quadripartite window and a blocking course at ground level, accompanied by a window in the gablehead above. To the left is a bay with a window at ground level, and a small, high-level window within the gablet. A lower wing to the outer left includes a corbelled and shouldered stack that breaks through the eaves at the centre, with windows in the flanking bays.
The southeast elevation features a window to the right at ground level, and a further window in a gablet to the left. A single-storey bay to the outer left incorporates a door and a window. The southwest elevation presents a single-storey projection to the right, with a small window breaking into a dormer gablet above. A bay to the left of centre is slightly advanced and has a gable with a small window in the gablehead.
The windows are a mix of multi-pane, coloured and leaded glazing in the upper lights of the bow window, and small-pane upper sashes with plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows elsewhere, except in the porch where plate glass glazing is used. The roof is covered in grey slates with decorative terracotta ridge tiles and finials, with a fish-scale band to the spire. Cavetto-coped ashlar stacks topped with cans are present. Plain bargeboarding completes the exterior.
The interior includes a polygonal hall with encaustic floor tiles. Flanking the entrance elevation are full-size ceramic lions.
