Description

Abbotshall Parish Church is a rectangular-plan church originally dated 1674, but largely rebuilt in the 18th century, specifically 1788. Additions by John Murray were made in 1898, specifically a choir and organ chamber. The interior was modernised in 1975 by Walker & Pride. The church has a centre bow to the north and Gothic detailing, along with a two-stage tower and spire.

The church is constructed of squared and snecked rubble, with some stugged areas, and has ashlar dressings. Visible features include a raised base course, a moulded eaves course, a band course, a mutuled cornice, and a crenellated parapet to the tower. An ashlar doorcase provides the main entrance. Pointed-arch openings are highlighted with voussoirs and stone mullions.

The north elevation is symmetrical, featuring square-headed openings at ground level. A large, conical-roofed bowed bay is centrally positioned, with a corniced, moulded doorcase and flanking small windows. Above the doorcase is a large bipartite window. Swept-roof bays flank the bowed bay at the re-entrant angles, each with three small windows and further windows on their outer returns.

The west elevation is dominated by an advanced two-stage tower. A tall window is positioned centrally, flanked by recessed faces. A low catslide-roofed bay, with crenellated eaves, is set in the re-entrant angle to the left, with a window above a basement door, and a tiny window to the right, with a further door to the left on the return.

The tower itself has a crenellated parapet and a short conical spire. The first stage of the tower features a recessed, Y-traceried window to the west. A prominent band course sits above, giving way to a tall second stage with a triangular window abutting the band course and a louvered oculus near the parapet. A date stone is noticeable high up on the north face. Three diminishing oval lucarnes are present on each face of the spire, culminating in a decorative iron weathervane finial.

The south elevation features a later projecting bay centrally located with two windows at a raised basement level. A lancet window sits above the basement, with a glazed oculus above that. Further lancets are positioned on each return, and traceried windows are in the recessed flanking bays.

The east elevation has a projecting bay with a tall traceried window at its centre.

The windows are fitted with multi-pane leaded lights, some featuring coloured margins. Stained glass is present (see notes). The roof is covered in graded grey slates.

The interior, largely dating from 1975, includes a vestry and session room flanking the main door. Glazed screen doors lead to a horseshoe-shaped galleried interior. Modern fixed timber pews are oriented towards the south, with a raised chancel and organ. Stained glass memorial windows from 1883, likely by Ballantine & Son, are positioned flanking the chancel. Two lights in the north gallery (dated 1886) depict Spring and Autumn, also by the same artist. Two further lights in the chancel are remnants from Raith Church (see notes).
