Description
The Electricity Substation on Abbotshall Road in Kirkcaldy is a single-storey classical lodge house and gateway designed by James Playfair in 1786. The building features a bow-ended shape and is constructed from dressed ashlar stone with droved quoins. It includes a base course, eaves cornice, and a blocking course, as well as a round-headed door with voussoirs.
On the southeast elevation, the entrance is located in a recessed bay at the center, featuring a doorpiece in a round-arched recess with a panelled timber door and a radial-astragalled fanlight. The southwest and northeast elevations are bowed and originally had three windows each, all of which are now blocked, with ashlar aprons below. The northwest elevation is also blocked at the center, but the pilasters remain visible.
The gateway and gates consist of ashlar gatepiers and coursed rubble screen walls topped with moulded ashlar coping and ashlar dressings. The southwest elevation has a central carriage entrance flanked by pyramidal-coped, square-section ashlar gatepiers and walls. There are round-headed pedestrian arches with engaged ashlar piers on either side, along with quadrant walls at the outer angles that have additional ashlar piers. Semicircular-coped rubble walls extend to the north and west.
The gates are early 19th century decorative wrought-iron gates for each opening.
