Description
The Caiplie Farmhouse dates to the early 19th century and was extended in the mid-19th century to form a T-shaped plan. Originally a two-storey, three-bay building facing west, it features a large, two-storey wing that projects from the centre of the west front. The farmhouse is harled with ashlar dressings, has straight skews—the south-west skew incorporating kneelers—and rectangular corniced stacks. It is roofed with slate and is adjoined to the south by a walled garden constructed of rubble with a flagged cope.
A mid-19th century cottage is located to the north of the farmhouse, connected by a rubble wall with a brick cope. The cottage is single-storey, built of rubble with ashlar dressings, and features a pantiled roof, straight skews with coped end stacks, and a pantiled outshot to the west.
The steading, dating to the earlier and mid-19th century, comprises three ranges arranged around a courtyard, which is closed to the west by the farmhouse. The south and east ranges are single-storey with a loft above, with gable ends featuring ashlar dressings, pantiled roofs, catslide and piended roofs over the loft doors. Three segmental-headed cart sheds are located at the north end of the east range. An octagonal pantiled horse-mill stands behind the east range. The north range consists of four parallel sheds that face the courtyard, three with broad-piended pantiled roofs, and the west-most is narrower and gabled. A long, single-storey, pantiled range links these sheds to the rear and extends eastwards.
