Description
The Caiplie Farmhouse is an early 19th-century building that was enlarged in the mid-19th century to create a T-shaped plan. Originally a two-story, three-bay structure with a west-facing front, a large two-story wing was added to the centre of the west front during the mid-19th century. The farmhouse is harled with ashlar dressings, features straight skews – the southwest skew includes kneelers – rectangular corniced stacks, and a slated roof. A walled garden adjoins the house to the south, constructed of rubble with a flagged cope.
Adjacent to the farmhouse, to the north and linked by a rubble wall with a brick cope, is a mid-19th-century Cottage. This is a single-story building of rubble construction with ashlar dressings and a pantiled roof. It has straight skews with coped end-stacks and a pantiled outshot to the west.
The Steading comprises three ranges arranged around a courtyard, with the west side closed by the Farmhouse. The south and east ranges are single-story with a loft above. They have gable ends with ashlar dressings and pantiled roofs, incorporating catslide and piended roofs above the loft doors. At the north end of the east range are three segmental-headed cart-sheds. An octagonal pantiled horse-mill is situated behind the east range. The north range consists of four parallel sheds facing the courtyard, three with broad-piended pantiled roofs; the westernmost is narrower and gabled. A long, single-story pantiled range links these sheds to the rear and extends eastwards.
