Description
Caiplie Farmhouse is an early 19th-century farmhouse that was extended in the mid-19th century to create a T-shaped plan. Originally it comprised two storeys and three bays, with its west-facing front. A large, two-storey wing was added in the mid-19th century, projecting from the centre of the west front, featuring bipartite windows in the west gable. The farmhouse is harled with ashlar dressings, straight skews—the south-west skew incorporating kneelers—and rectangular corniced stacks. It has a slated roof. A walled garden adjoins the house to the south, constructed of rubble with a flagged coping.
To the north of the farmhouse and linked by a rubble wall with a brick coping is a mid-19th-century cottage, which is single-storey. It is built of rubble with ashlar dressings and has a pantiled roof, straight skews with coped end stacks, and a pantiled outshot to the west.
The steading, dating from the earlier and mid-19th century, consists of three ranges arranged around a courtyard, which is closed to the west by the farmhouse. The south and east ranges are single-storey with a loft above, featuring gable ends with ashlar dressings, pantiled roofs, catslide and piended roofs over the loft doors. Three segmental-headed cart sheds are located at the north end of the east range. An octagonal pantiled horse-mill is positioned behind the east range. The north range comprises four parallel sheds with ends facing the courtyard; three have broad-piended pantiled roofs, while the westernmost shed is narrower and gabled. Linking these to the rear and extending eastwards is a long, single-storey, pantiled range.
