Description
The Caiplie farmhouse dates to the early 19th century and was expanded in the mid 19th century to form a T-shaped plan. Originally it was a two-story, three-bay building facing west. A large, two-story wing was added to the west front around the centre of the original structure. The farmhouse is harled with ashlar dressings, straight skews (the south-west skew has kneelers), rectangular corniced stacks, and a slated roof. A walled garden adjoins the house to the south, constructed of rubble with a flagged cope.
A cottage, built in the mid 19th century, sits to the north of the farmhouse and is connected by a rubble wall with a brick cope. The cottage is a single-story building with rubble and ashlar dressings, a pantiled roof, straight skews with coped end stacks, and a pantiled outshot to the west.
The steading, developed in the earlier and mid 19th century, consists of three ranges arranged around a courtyard, which is closed to the west by the farmhouse. The south and east ranges are single-story with a loft above. They have gable ends with ashlar dressings and pantiled roofs, incorporating catslide and piended sections over the loft doors. Three segmental arched cart-sheds are located at the north end of the east range. Behind the east range stands an octagonal pantiled horse-mill. The north range is comprised of four parallel sheds facing the courtyard, three with broad-piended pantiled roofs and one narrower, gabled shed. A long, single-story pantiled range connects to the rear of these sheds and extends eastwards.
