Description
Lathrisk House is a substantially rebuilt 18th-century house, dating back to 1786, constructed in a simple classical style. Earlier fabric is incorporated into the rear ranges. It is a two-storey building with seven bays, the central bay being wider, brought forward, and topped with a pediment. The front elevation of 1786 is faced with ashlar, with the remaining elevations largely harled. A round-arched entrance, surrounded by a keystone and a fanlight, is flanked by pilastered sidelights; above this is a tripartite window, and an oculus sits in the pediment. The windows are 12-pane sashes, and a band course runs between the floors. A mutule cornice sits above, alongside symmetrically placed chimney stacks projecting from a piended slate roof. Narrow linking bays connect the main range to single-storey, piend-roofed wings, each featuring a Venetian window. A bay at the rear of the 1786 range, containing a circular, cantilevered staircase, forms a link with an earlier three-storey house, which has been significantly altered with later additions.
The west elevation is three storeys high and includes a trelliced porch. A two-storey and attic central projection features a door in the re-entrant angle alongside a turnpike stair, and an additional two-storey wing projects westward at the south. Symmetrically positioned stacks and a piended slate roof complete the appearance. Blocks are linked by quadrant walls constructed of rubble, with square gatepiers topped with ball finials and cornices; these gatepiers are likely from the 17th century, creating a courtyard.
Inside the 1786 range, panelled doors are set within architraves with entablatures, alongside original chimney pieces and decorative plasterwork. A simple fan cornice is found within the entrance hall. The rear range contains two parallel vaulted chambers on the ground floor. A gatepier is also located to the southwest.
The flanking wings might be older than the 1786 rebuilding. A 1974 sale catalogue is held within the Sites and Monuments Record, along with references to the Old Statistical Account of 1791, the RCAHM Inventory of Fife (1933), and Sibbald's History of Fife (1803 edition).
