Description
The Windygates Hotel, located on Milton Road in Windygates, dates from the early to earlier 19th century. This two-storey building with an attic features three bays and is situated on a corner site. It is constructed from squared and snecked rubble with harl, and has droved long and short quoins along with quoin strips. The design includes base and dividing courses, Venetian windows with voussoirs, a round-headed door, stone mullions, and a corbelled oriel window with stop-chamfered arrises.
On the south elevation facing Milton Road, there is a piended roof to the right and a single-storey, flat-roofed extension to the left, which is not included in this listing. The elevation is symmetrical, featuring a modern part-glazed door in a round-headed doorway at the center, flanked by Venetian windows in the adjacent bays and additional Venetian windows at the first floor. Above the central door, there is a low, flat-roofed timber door.
The east elevation, which faces Kennoway Road, has irregular bays. There is a door to the right of center, with another door and window further to the right, and a blank single-storey bay at the outer right. The first floor features a prominent corbelled and canted oriel window to the left of center, a modern hotel sign at the center, and a shouldered wallhead stack above, flanked by flat-roofed dormer windows.
The north elevation is mostly blank, with an advanced gable to the right of center that has a first-floor window on the return to the left. There is a blank, piended single-storey bay in the re-entrant angle to the left, with a window to the left of a recessed first floor and a modern hotel sign to the right. A further recessed bay is located at the outer right, with a window at the first floor above a lean-to roof connecting to an outbuilding.
On the west elevation, there is a modern door, possibly converted from a window, located off-center to the left at the first floor, accessed from a fire escape over the flat-roofed extension. A window is positioned to the outer left, with a modern hotel sign to the outer right and another window above in the gablehead beneath a broad stack.
The windows throughout the building feature 2 and 4-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cavetto coped stacks.
The outbuildings include a slated, piend-roofed structure, possibly a converted coach house, which has a stone forestair leading to a wide timber door on the left side of the north elevation.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls, which include a coped boundary wall with ball finialled gatepiers to the south and painted boundary walls to the north.
